2015 Opening Cup

Fifteen of us participated in the Opening Cup at Oudenaarde on Saturday 18th April.  First and foremost, our heartfelt thanks go to Luc Vekeman who very kindly organised this outing with his home club and who sadly for us was not one of the participants as he was on holiday in Turkey with his family.   Luc, we spoke of you and thought of you very often and hope you had a super holiday.  The weather was perfect for golfing - a typical April day with sunshine and a slight chill in the air and the course, which was in excellent condition, was stunningly beautiful.

The Club was amazingly quiet due to the fact that many of its members were away for the Easter Break and at times it felt as though we had the course to ourselves. Everyone had a most enjoyable day and there were some very good scores!  We all met up at the end of the afternoon on the sunny terrace, overlooking the 18th hole, for drinks and the prize giving ceremony.  There were several super prizes, including a surprise free green fee.  The €65 payback will go into the Club treasury.  Luc and the gracious Oudenaarde staff gave us two free passes that we awarded to the top Stableford scorers.

Congratulations go to Paul Ballinger who scored 42 points and was the winner in Class 1 (handicaps 0-22.9) and to Dick Zandee, who came second with a score of 35. Dany De Lange was the winner in Class II (handicaps 23-36) with a score of 30 points followed closely by Brigitte Horton who came second (on count back) with a score of 28. The longest drives, Men's and Women's, were won by James Mackey and Paula Stewart and the nearest to the pin were won by a husband a wife couple, Chris Murray and Dany De Lange!  John Briggs had a birdie on hole 11, where he masterfully chipped in from behind the bunker and the ball just rolled into the hole!  Well done all!

The next event is the Nations' Cup which will be held at L'Empereur Golf Club on Saturday 6th June for which you have already received the first notice.  We look forward to seeing 28 of you at this event.  Your nation needs YOU !!!
